The route at a glance
For most guests from the UK, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the USA, Zurich is the most convenient airport for Lech: more long-haul and low-cost connections than Innsbruck, and a motorway almost all the way. The drive follows the A1/A13 through the Rhine valley, crosses into Austria at Feldkirch, continues past Bludenz and turns off at Langen am Arlberg up the Flexen road to Lech. In normal traffic that is about 2 h 15 min; on snowy weekends allow up to three hours.
Innsbruck Airport is closer (115 km, about 1 h 35 min, from € 210) but has far fewer connections, with most UK winter flights landing on Saturdays. Friedrichshafen (126 km) and Munich (307 km) are the other options – all with the same fixed-price service.
Option 1: private transfer with AlpTaxi
Your driver meets you in the arrivals area at Zurich Airport with a name sign, helps with skis and suitcases and drives you directly to your hotel in Lech, Oberlech, Zürs, Zug or Warth. Flight monitoring is included, so a delayed landing simply moves the pick-up. The fare is fixed when you book and is the final price – ski luggage and child seats are included, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.
The Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers costs € 420 (€ 140 per person); the V-Class for up to seven costs € 490 (€ 70 per person), the Vito for eight € 450, and two Vitos for up to 16 people € 890 – about € 56 per head. Option 2: Railjet and bus via Langen am Arlberg or St. Anton
Lech has no station of its own. From the airport, take the SBB train down to Zürich HB (10–15 minutes), then the Railjet towards Innsbruck and Vienna, which runs every two hours. Get off at Langen am Arlberg (15 km from Lech, about 2 h 20 min from Zurich) and take bus 750 for the last 20 minutes; or continue to St. Anton am Arlberg (20 km) and use bus 760 over the Arlberg pass, about 30 minutes. Not every Railjet stops in Langen, so check the connection when you buy your ticket.
Tickets: a second-class fare Zurich Airport–Langen costs around CHF 45–70 depending on the day and how early you book (SBB supersaver tickets are cheaper), plus a few euros for the bus. Including the changes and waiting times, plan 3½ to 4 hours. In heavy snow the Arlberg pass can close, which affects bus 760 but not the Langen route through the tunnel.
Option 3: the Arlberg Express shared shuttle
The Arlberg Express is a scheduled coach from Zurich Airport to Lech and St. Anton. It costs € 65 per person one way (€ 130 return, € 35 for children under 12), takes 3 to 3½ hours with stops in Bludenz and Hohenems and departs from bus stop “Lane R” at the airport. In the winter timetable (30 November 2026 to 11 April 2027) five lines run, one of them daily, the others on weekends; in summer there is one line. Seats must be reserved, in winter at least 24 hours ahead.
It is the cheapest option for one or two people who can plan around the timetable. From three people the private transfer costs about the same per person, is an hour faster and does not depend on departure times.
Which option is right for you?
Based on how our guests to the Arlberg actually travel:
- One or two people, flexible arrival time: the Arlberg Express is the best value; the train is the fallback if the shuttle does not run on your day.
- Three to seven people: the private transfer is as cheap per head as the shuttle, 60–90 minutes faster and takes you to the hotel door – no walk from the bus stop with skis and suitcases.
- Late arrivals, families with small children, lots of ski luggage or a Saturday in high season: book the transfer – the last shuttle and bus leave early in the evening.
Good to know before you travel
The Flexen road between Langen and Lech is well maintained but can close for a few hours during avalanche control after heavy snowfall. Your driver follows the road authority’s updates and will tell you if a wait is needed; a delayed flight never costs extra, because the pick-up simply moves with it. For the return journey we recommend leaving Lech three hours before a European departure from Zurich.
